Entertainment district study approved

Changes for bars downtown could be in the works.

Augusta city leaders approved a sub-committee to study creating an entertainment district downtown.

One aspect would allow customers to take their alcoholic drinks with them in a plastic cup when they go.

Supporters say it will help make downtown trendy and cater to the coming cyber boom.

“Is this the most pressing issue in town? Bars and tables and cups to go? It’s not but we got to move this city forward and this was the next issue to come up that I wanted to discuss and people wanted to see us discuss. We’ve got other issues too but this is one we have to move the city forward,” said Commissioner Sean Frantom.

Supporters say the to-go cups would benefit those going to concerts at one of the theaters downtown or the civic center complex.
