Downtown Augusta adult clubs not closing immediately

CSRA News

Big changes are now in motion for adult entertainment downtown Augusta.

The owner of the last two strip clubs downtown, James Whitey Lester, died on April 9th, according to the Aiken County Coroner.

Earlier this year, commissioners rejected a plan to allow adult entertainment licenses to be transferred after the death of the owner. But this doesn’t mean the adult clubs will be closing immediately.

“It’s my understanding they shutdown either when the will is probated or the end of the year, which ever comes first,” says Mayor Pro-Tem Sean Frantom.

“Even though we can’t transfer that’s when its going to be?”

“Right,” said the Mayor Pro-Tem.

“Why that time period?”

“That’s what legal told me months ago when we had the conversation about it,” said Frantom

Adult entertainment is allowed in industrial zone but not downtown.

Earlier this year commissioners changed city code to allow alcohol to be served in adult clubs in the proper zones.
