UPDATE: Georgia Pacific spokesperson, Rick Kimble, says the fire started around 2 pm. Georgia Pacific is a Particleboard factory. One of the particle mills was faulty and as employees tried to extinguish it, it grew. They called surrounding agencies for assistance.
Officials confirm 11 agencies showed up to assist. They say no employee was reported injured, but one firefighter was taken in an ambulance.
The city ran out of water, and they had to suction the water from a nearby pond.
Sheriff’s were diverting traffic at Harrison Road and White Oak Road, as well as Harrison Road and the bypass.
The local school nearby let first responders park in the area and allowed them to get food and water.
THOMSON, Ga. (WJBF) – Fire crews from multiple agencies are battling a large fire at the Georgia Pacific facility in Thomson.
Columbia county spokesperson Cassidy Harris confirms to NewsChannel 6 that Columbia County Fire Rescue and Grovetown Public Safety are there helping with that fire.
That facility is on Harrison Road in Thomson.
