Commissioners mull potential Lock and Dam legal fight

Augusta looks to put up a fight to get what it wants at Lock and Dam.

City leaders opposing the Corp of Engineers plan to remove the structure and replace it with a rock weir.

The goal is to let endangered fish get around it.

The city wants to fix the Lock and Dam.

Mayor Hardie Davis says legal action needs to be considered to make sure the dam is saved.

Will commissioners support that?

“If that is where we end up, that is where we end up. I’m not sure if supporting it is the correct word to use for that. I think the river and pool that we have is vital to Augusta as we know her, so I hope we’re going to do everything possible to fight that,” says Commissioner Brandon Garrett.

“Including going to court and spending that money?”

“I hope not,” says Garrett.

Tuesday Commissioners will talk about bringing in consultants to help make their lock and dam case to the Corps.
