Augusta commissioners have voted to make May 3rd “James Brown Day” in the city.
The event will be marked each year.
The commission voted unanimously to mark the day, which is the Godfather of Soul’s birthday.
Brown was born on May 3, 1933 in Barnwell, South Carolina. His parents moved to Augusta when he was young. Brown first started singing in talent shows in Augusta in the 1940s.
He died on Christmas Day, December 25, 2006.
