The Columbia County School District is calling on the community for school supply donations for its second annual Start Back with a Full Pack event. The event helps families in need by providing back to school essentials ranging from backpacks, paper, spiral notebooks and mechanical pencils, to crayons, rulers, scissors and much more. Last years the event was able to assist more than 600 families in need, including assisting parents with necessary paperwork like free and reduced lunch forms, or medical needs. But the need for school supplies is even greater.
“School supplies are expensive, particularly as they age and go through the grade levels. We get lots of supplies for K-2 students. The community is very generous in those areas, but where we see a real need for supplies is 3rd through 12th grade; because as the students get bigger, the backpacks get bigger,” said Assistant Superintendent Michele Spearman.
This year, the Start Back With A Full Pack event will be housed in the individual schools to provide families direct access to the supplies they need. The event is just one of many to be held under the School District’s new wraparound service model to be implemented this school year.
“We all know from research that children must have basic needs met before they can learn and this is just apart of the school partnering with families to make sure those basic needs are met. When children come to school hungry its hard for them to concentrate on studies so we want to make sure they’re well fed that they have the supplies that they need, and we can take as many barriers away from students so that all they have to concentrate on is studying the material that’s presented to them, ” Sherman said.
Wraparound services will include the areas of counseling, maintaining a food pantry, a clothes closet and career counseling. If you would like to donate supplies towards this year drive the items needed are listed below:
