UPDATE (10:30am, 04/13/2020) – The mother of the shooting victim has been charged in this case. Stephanie LaWanda Thomas has been charged with four counts of Cruelty to Children in the 2nd Degree. Police say Thomas left the children unattended resulting in the toddler being shot.


UPDATE (8:15 p.m., 04/13/2020) – Around 2:30 P.M. deputies responded to the 800 block of Cummings Road in Evans in reference to a shooting.

A 2 year old, an 8 year old, and a 6 year old went to the home with their mother, Stephanie Thomas. The children were alone in the living room watching T.V.. The 8 year old boy found a handgun and began playing with it. He accidentally fired the gun, shooting the 2 year old girl in the abdomen.

Police are working on identifying the person who brought the gun into the home and left before police arrived.

The little girl is still in surgery. Charges are pending.


UPDATE (4:20 p.m., 04/13/2020) – A little girl only one month away from her second birthday is currently recovering at a local hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen around 2:30 p.m. today.

Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the scene of the shooting at a residence along the 800 block of Cummings Road in Evans.

There has been no arrest or charges made at this time.

EVANS, Ga. (WJBF) – Columbia County investigators responding to the scene of a shooting incident involving a child.

According to dispatch, a 23-month-old was shot in the stomach on the 800 block of Cummings Road in Evans.

No word on the child’s condition at this time. No further details regarding the circumstances have been given.
