The name of the Calhoun Expressway is not changing, at least not now.
Last year Augusta Commissioners approved changing the road name to honor Congressman Charlie Norwood and Veterans.
But because it is a state road, the local legislative delegation had to approve the change, something that did not get done this past session.
“It could come back up next year I don’t believe anybody actually did a formal bill on it and I’m not sure that’s going to happen but it’s something we will look at but this was a very consequential year so it was probably not a good time to try and do that this year,” said State Senator Harold Jones.
“So Calhoun stays Calhoun,”
“Right now the Calhoun is the Calhoun unfortunately,” said Senator Jones.
:Commissioner Bill Fennoy says he pushed to rename the road because of Calhoun’s pro-slavery views. He says he is very disappointed.
