Augusta Commissioners are mourning the loss of one of their own.
10th District Commissioner Grady Smith died Tuesday at age 71.
Funeral arrangements were announced Wednesday.
A visitation will be held at Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Directors on Davis Road Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Trinity on the Hill.
Smith served nearly 8 years as a Commissioner and two as Mayor pro-tem.
His term was set to expire in January.
John Clark is the commissioner-elect in that district.
Under city rules, commissioners will vote to fill Smith’s open seat until January.
“It’s a really sad day and I haven’t known Grady for years and years and years but in the short time of knowing him he always made me feel comfortable,” said Commissioner Dennis Williams. “Recognizing you and making sure you have a good day. Then you have to look at him, you know, he was coming to commission meetings and had to be helped up the stairs but he was coming. He was alert and knew what was going on and he was beneficial to our county. We’ve lost quite a bit today.”
