Breaking news out of Richmond County 

NewsChannel 6 has learned Augusta commissioner Grady Smith has died.
Mayor Hardie Davis announced the news at  today’s Augusta commission meeting.

It was a very emotional moment when commissioners got the word of Smith’s death.
Grady smith has spent nearly eight years on the board,  serving two years as the mayor pro-tem.
he was liked and respected and will be missed by his fellow commissioners.

“So it’s a really sad day and I haven’t known Grady for years and years and years but in the short time of knowing him he always made me feel comfortable.. Recognizing you and making sure you have a good day.  Then you have to look at him, you know, he was coming to commission meetings and had to be helped up the stairs but he was coming he was alert and know what was going on and he was beneficial to our county.  We’ve lost quite a bit today,” said Commissioner Dennis Wiliams.

Under city rules  Commissioners vote to fill  a vacancy on the board.
smith’s term was up the end of the year in may John Clark won the District ten race, so he would be the clear favorite to fill the seat.
