AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) – A teenager is behind bars in Aiken County following a sexual assault involving a 7-year-old girl.
“Things of this nature normally don’t happen in this area,” Belvedere Ridge Neighborhood Watch President Sandy Haskell told NewsChannel 6’s Shawn Cabbagestalk.
Haskell learned of the incident almost immediately.
“I saw it on the Nextdoor, which is a neighborhood app,” he added.
The incident happened on September 15 at a small retention pond near the intersection of Audubon CIrcle and Lehigh Avenue. Andrew Todd, 18, accused of committing the assault.
“it behooves us to be a little more vigilant after something like this happens,” Haskell said.
According to an incident report, Todd was found walking on Georgia Avenue by North Augusta Public Safety Officers following the assault.
“Both families, the victim and the accused, knew each other. Neither were strangers in the neighborhood and not being strangers in the neighborhood that’s not something like the neighborhood watch would have noticed,” Haskell added.
Those living in the area are shocked by the revelation. “You see these types of things on the radio and the television and usually it happens somewhere else and now it’s happening in our neighborhood,” Haskell added.
When asked if the neighboorhood safe, Haskell said, “Yes. We think it’s safe. Part of that is because of the neighborhood watch.”
He now wants families to keep a closer eye on young ones in any area, not just this one
“I just think it’s bringing an awareness to most of the citizens of Belvedere, and all over for that matter, be a little bit more vigilant and watch a little closer,” he said
A regularly scheduled Neighborhood Watch meeting was held Tuesday night. Since the case is still part of an active investigation, officials were limited by what could be shared.
