100 High School students that America needs to know about — including one at Wagener-Salley High

WAGENER, S.C. (WJBF) — Here are 100 High School students that America needs to know about. One of them is a student at Wagener-Salley High School.

“If somebody like me can do it, anybody can do it,” Nyjelah Corley told NewsChannel 6’s Shawn Cabbagestalk.

Corley was chosen out of thousands of students thought to be forward-thinking leaders and entrepreneurs. Some have beaten the odds under difficult and extreme circumstances.

“She is so compassioned and always trying to help other students and she’s been that way since I’ve met her last year,” Lead School Counselor Alyson Moots said

Thousands of educators from across the United States, like Moots, submitted recommendations on their students.

A beta club and ROTC member, her dream is to bring more culture, resources, and hope to the Wagener community. Understanding the importance of education, she decided to write a book with its proceeds helping to start a community outreach program

“Writing expresses myself and I write what’s around me and the surroundings I’m in and also we are in a very small town and a small school. So I wanted to do something powerful to help uplift our students.  What I see what they see on a regular I wanted to write about and I just always loved to write and so to help with reading scores or just get active in reading period I said why not write something that I’m interested in and my peers could be interested in.”

“I knew she would do great things, I just didn’t know she was up for the award,” Virtual Lab Instructor Christina Romines said.

The sophomore who dreams of writing songs and plays isn’t sure where the future will take her but she says the town of Wagener will be in her thoughts.

“When I make it I can come back and just help everybody and just be inspired and whatever comes next, I’m ready for it,” she said.

Pawn to the Game is expected to be released by September 2019.

Meanwhile, another student from Aiken County, Danielle Edwards of Williston-Elko High School was also selected. Danielle attended several mission trips and is thinking about chosing a career in the    mission field. . She is extremely talented in art, using her talent to beautify the school and town.
