RALEIGH, N.C. -

Thousands of music fans from across the globe will once again descend on downtown Raleigh for one of the nation's most eclectic music festivals.

From Sept. 4-6, more than 140 bands will perform as part of the fifth annual Hopscotch Music Festival across 12 stages, including the Contemporary Art Museum, Deep South, Fletcher Opera Theater, Kennedy Theater, Kings Barcade, Lincoln Theater, the Pour House, Slim's, The Hive, Tir Na Nog, Vintage 21 and City Plaza.

Among those performing the City Plaza shows are De La Soul, Spoon, St. Vincent, Mastodon and Detroit-based proto-punk legends Death; while some of the standout club shows include Sun Kil Moon, Jamie XX, Phosphorescent, Reptar, Thurston Moore, Ed Schrader's Music Beat, American Aquarium, The War on Drugs, Saint Rich and Diarrhea Planet.

Of course, one of the signatures of Hopscotch since its inception in 2010 is the pride the festival takes in North Carolina musicians. This year is no different with about 40 percent of the lineup hailing the Old North State.

Performing alongside De La Soul for Hopscotch's first ever Thursday night City Plaza show will be Durham-based hip-hop duo Toon & The Real Laww. Joining Spoon and St. Vincent Friday night is Lonnie Walker from Raleigh. And Saturday night Valient Thorr will open for Mastodon and Death.

There are hundreds of other bands who will perform over the course of the 3-day festival and who also deserve to be named here. Instead, close your eyes and put your finger down anywhere on the schedule, you'll be sure to discover your new favorite band.

While music is the highlight of Hopscotch, the festival also offers a number of activities leading up to the main event and free events during the festival for those looking for a break from the tunes.

On Sept. 3 and 4, Hopscotch Music Festival and New Kind will host the inaugural Hopscotch Design Festival. The two-day festival features more than 25 sessions from presenters who work across the disciplines of graphic design, user experience design, urban planning, technology, architecture, music, food, film and more.

Of the diversions offered during the music festival, Hopscotch will host a poster exhibition and market known as POSTERscotch at the Convention Center.

Over the course of the festival's 5 years, more than 600 bands have performed and 75,000 fans have attended the Hopscotch Music Festival.
