DURHAM, N.C. -

A Durham-based company, which provided a life-saving drug earlier this year to a 7-year-old boy from Virginia, plans to discuss potential therapies and vaccines that could help with the Ebola outbreak.

Chimerix will attend the World Health Organization's two-day conference on Sept. 4-5 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Chimerix said its antiviral brincidofovir (BCV) showed signs of activity when used against the Ebola virus.

Brincidofovir was the same experimental drug that Chimerix gave Josh Hardy, who was battling four types of cancer at St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Chimerix and the FDA added Hardy to a clinical trial, where he improved and was released from the hospital in July.

There is no current FDA-approved vaccine for Ebola, but the National Institute of Health is working with GlaxoSmithKline, which has offices in Research Triangle Park, to start human trials of an Ebola virus vaccine this week. A Durham-based company, BioCryst, could soon do the same.

Last month, BioCryst received federal approval and funding to start clinical human trials for a drug that treats viruses like Ebola.
