GRU Women's Golf Founder Passes Away

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Longtime Jaguar Golf supporter Neal Garland passed away on Saturday, Aug. 23 in Longview, Texas after a long battle with cancer. Garland was 78.

J. Neal Garland was an avid golfer and fan, who helped widen the scope of the sport at the university. Garland was a women's golf founder at GRU Augusta. In his honor, GRU Athletics offers the J. Neal Garland Golf Scholarship to help support student-athletes accomplish their goals of playing collegiate golf at the highest level.

J. Neal Garland was born on October 24, 1935, in Jefferson, Texas, the fourth of five sons of Edwin Grady Garland, Sr. and Kennie Elizabeth Edge Garland. When he was an infant, he and his family moved to Longview, where he graduated from Longview High School in 1954. He played on the Longview High School varsity golf team and attended the University of Texas on a golf scholarship. He received his Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Geology, in 1959.
