CARY, N.C. -

A Cary family says they have their neighbor to thank for saving their home after they say he used a garden hose to put out a fire believed to have been sparked by lightning during Monday's severe weather.

Firefighters were called to a home on Swansboro Drive in Cary around 8:11 p.m. after lightning was believed to have struck the house. Investigators are working to determine if lightning caused the house fire.

Cary police say there was significant damage to the home and the family has been displaced as a result.

The homeowner, David Raper, said he and his family were out to dinner when lightning struck their home during Monday's severe weather.

Raper said the family's neighbor, who is an off-duty Durham firefighter, was using a garden hose to try to put out the fire when they pulled up to their home. The neighbor declined to provide his name.

"My neighbor is a firefighter out of Durham," Raper said. "He got the water hose to fight it, called his wife, his wife called us [and] we came home as quickly as we could"

He said they could see and smell smoke when they turned into their subdivision, but they hoped it wasn't coming from their house.

Raper said his family has lived in their home for 18 years. He said their cat, Katie, is now missing after after being scared by the fire.
