WJBF EXCLUSIVE: Mayor Deke Copenhaver Talks Career Move

Posted: Updated:
Augusta, GA - He called Wednesday one of the most disappointing days in office. Now, Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver is getting set for a brand new career.

Wednesday was supposed to be the day that Copenhaver had the votes he needed to confirm his choice for the city administrator's job, Oscar Rodriguez. But, instead of calling Rodriguez to congratulate him, the mayor now has to call him with bad news. Those votes vanished during Copenhaver's called meeting and Augusta Commissioners chose to wait until January to resume the administrator search.  That's when new leaders, including Mayor-elect Hardie Davis Jr., will be in place.

During Thursday's taping of The Means Report, I asked Mayor Copenhaver about his future plans.

"Well, Brad, it's ironic that you should ask that," he said. "I have gotten to have a strong relationship with an international design firm, Cannon Design, their Chicago offices. We've talked about working together with me serving in a consulting role for them. So, they are flying me to Chicago next Thursday."

Mayor Copenhaver says the job involves more travel than he's used to, but he says he's excited about the opportunity. He also recalled a recent conversation where he told someone, "If I could get paid to work in cities where they wanted you there and they wanted to listen to you and learn from your experience, that's a great thing for me."

Mayor Copenhaver talks about what he will do in his new role, plus covers controversies at animal services and talks property tax increases. There's also what I can only describe as a very bizarre segment that proves the mayor is a great sport. Watch The Means Report, or set your DVR now for Sunday at noon right here on WJBF News Channel 6.
