HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Motorists in West Hillsborough face more than a two hour wait to renew their driver licenses and tags, frustrating many residents.

But if customers went to the Tax Collector's Service Center in downtown Tampa they could have taken care of business and been on their way in just minutes, according to the posted wait times updated continuously on the tax collector's website.

The Hillsborough Tax Collector's Office tells 8 On Your Side the problem has been amplified by the recent closure of a state-run license renewal office on Martin Luther King Blvd. That closing came six months earlier than expected and caught the tax collector by surprise.

"As a result of the state closing and making that an administrative office we're obviously feeling the aches and pains of all the customers coming into our office," said agency spokeswoman Nancy Millan.

8 On Your Side did some digging and discovered there are ways consumers can mitigate the pain of waiting at the tag office.

Those strategies include such things as making appointments in advance, not going to the tax office at the start or end of the month when those offices are generally busiest, avoiding the lunch hour rush, and going online at the tax collector's website to scout the various wait times before choosing an office to visit.

It's also a good idea to review online exactly what documents you need to bring for license renewals and other business to save yourself from waiting in line twice.

The reality is that most folks simply drive to the office closest to them without giving it much forethought when it's time to renew a license or tag.

Millan tells 8 On Your Side there has just been an expansion of the Brandon service center to 20,0000 square feet and an expansion is planned soon for the center on Waters Ave., where wait times for customers exceeded two hours Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the only option for walk-ins is to take a number and wait.
