16 dead rodents found at Tampa Bay restaurant

State inspectors temporarily closed five Tampa Bay eateries from June 9 through June 20 after discovering rodents or roaches.

We've listed the restaurants that were closed below, along with details about what inspectors say they found.

Goodfellas Pizza & Wings at 11002 4th. St. N. in St. Petersburg

June 9, 2014: Restaurant temporarily closed with 28 violations

  • 15 dead rodents under reach-in cooler on cook's line.
  • 1 dead rodent in glue trap under reach-in cooler.
  • Rodent activity present as evidenced by rodent droppings found: 50 plus semi-soft, dry droppings in compressor and around floor behind reach-in cooler on cook's line.
  • Live flies in kitchen: in 3-compartment sink dish room.
  • Potentially hazardous cold food held at greater than 41 degrees: raw chicken 54°F, egg wash 54°F, ham 52°F.
  • Establishment operating without a license from the Division of Hotels and Restaurants.

June 10, 2014: Restaurant reopened with 10 violations

June 10, 2014: Restaurant temporarily closed with 14 violations

  • Roach activity present as evidenced by live roaches found: observed 12 live roaches under reach-in cooler on make line, observed 5 live roaches under prep table.
  • Food being prepared in a room that has screening in place of all or part of a wall: back room off kitchen screen-in walls
  • Raw animal foods not properly separated from one another based upon minimum required cooking temperature in reach-in cooler: top portion of reach-in cooler chicken placed in rear and seafood placed up front, potential for dripping

June 11, 2014: Restaurant reopened with 7 violations

Lanores Nifty 50s Cafe at 817 Clearwater- Largo Rd. in Largo

June 11, 2014: Restaurant temporarily closed with 18 violations

  • Dead roaches on premises: one dead roach on a plate in non-working reach-in cooler.
  • Roach activity present as evidenced by live roaches found: 11 live roaches found in gaskets of non-working reach-in cooler.
  • 4 live roaches found near hinges and gaskets of non-working, reach-in cooler.
  • Refrigerator not maintaining potentially hazardous food at proper temperatures.
  • Potentially hazardous cold food held at greater than 41 degrees: cheese 60°F , pancake batter 70°F potato salad opened 50°F , milk 50°F , beef patties and chicken breast 60°F egg wash 79°F , potato 60°F.

June 12, 2014: Restaurant reopened with 2 violations

Evergreen of Inverness at 238 Highway 41 S. in Inverness

June 12, 2014: Restaurant temporarily closed with 35 violations

  • Roach activity present as evidenced by live roaches found: observed 8 live roaches under cook's line reach-in cooler.
  • Observed 10 live roaches under prep sink, observed 9 live roaches under dish machine, observed approximately 60 live roaches under dishwashing area, observed 7 live roaches under 2 door stand-up, reach-in cooler, observed 5 live roaches under large prep table.
  • Fly sticky tape hanging over food or food preparation area or food-contact equipment: multiple fly tapes above prep area hanging from ceiling.
  • Pesticide or insecticide stored with or above food, clean equipment and utensils, clean linens and or single-service items: raid spray can next to food under prep counter.

June 13, 2014: Restaurant reopened with 17 violations

Razzles Cafe at 5914 Gail Boulevard in Zephyrhills

June 20, 2014: Restaurant temporarily closed with 15 violations

  • Roach activity present as evidenced by live roaches found: 20-30 active in restaurant's dry food storage area and dish room.
  • Screen door torn or in poor repair - vermin present.
  • Soil residue build-up on nonfood-contact surface: sugar containers
  • Potentially hazardous food thawed at room temperature.

June 20, 2014: Restaurant reopened with no violations

Inspectors from Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation conducted the inspections. The department cited violations of Florida's sanitation and safety laws, which are based on the standards of U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Food Code.

While most establishments correct all violations in a timely manner (often during the inspection), the division's procedures are designed to compel compliance with all violations through follow-up visits, administration action or closure when necessary, according to the Florida DBPR website.
