***UPDATED at 6:24 P.M. on Wednesday, June 25th***
Just a few weeks ago, Connie Bowles contacted News Channel 6 with complaints about Hughes Roofing Company. At the time, her Columbia County home still had tarps on the roof from a job that she says Sean Hughes never completed.
She says recently, another company finished the work.
"We are so excited to finally have a roof. We had a big rain storm last night and thank goodness we had a roof on that was put on by a reliable roofing company,” Bowles said.
On Tuesday, Bowles spent most of her day in court. During that proceeding, Hughes was arrested and charged with theft by deception.
"We definitely feel very relieved. It feels like a long time coming even though it's just been a few months, but definitely relieved,” Bowles said.
Bowles says Hughes was supposed to show up to court with the $4,000 he owed her, but instead...
"Sean Hughes showed up to court 10 minutes late, which is never a good idea. And instead of the $4,000, he showed up with a briefcase full of gift certificates for a new roof put on by Hughes Roofing. And of course, they would expire in 12 months,” Bowles said.
That's when Hughes was taken into custody.
In the meantime, as she waits for the case to go to trial, Bowles is still trying to raise awareness about unlicensed contractors.
"Realistically, we knew we probably wouldn't get our money back, but we did this definitely to put a stop to what he was doing. All so nobody else would have to go through what we went through,” she said.
Hughes is in the Columbia County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond. He is set to appear in court next month to face 2 separate charges related to license and permit violations.
