NC House approves bill to register mopeds

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - The House has approved new regulations for mopeds, requiring that the vehicles must be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles just like motorcycles.

The bill passed Thursday initially required that moped users also carry insurance. But that mandate was stripped from the bill in a committee. Starting next year, mopeds will be required to have a license plate and title and owners must pay the associated fees.

The bill also directs a legislative committee to study whether more regulations are needed to keep mopeds safe.

Onslow County Republican Rep. Phillip Shepard, who is the bill's primary sponsor, said he hopes the study can shed more light on what other regulations might be needed.

The bill takes effect July 1, 2015.
