SPRING HILL, FL (WFLA) -

A Hernando County Animal Services officer discovered 47 dogs and three cats living "deplorable" conditions amongst feces inside a Spring Hill home.

Animal services officers removed 21 dogs from the home. The woman who lives there was given until June 25 to find homes for the other 26 dogs and three cats.

Hernando County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call on Tuesday afternoon about barking dogs at the home which is located at 12287 Landfair St. The deputy said as he approached the home he heard dogs barking and he smelled urine and feces. When resident, Naoma Britten opened the door, the deputy said he saw numerous animals inside the home and in deplorable living conditions.

An animal services officer was dispatched to the home. Britten told the officer that she operates a non-profit rescue and gets animals from animal control and rescue groups. Britten allowed the officer and deputy inside and said she was not able to clean up after the animals because she does not feel well.

The deputy and officer went inside the home to check on the animals. They said there was a strong smell of urine, feces, trash, high grass, old carpet, dishes, dirty animal carriers and containers of stagnant water inside the home.

They went to an enclosed garage where the odor of animal urine and feces was extremely strong. The deputy and officer say they found nine dogs in nine metal crates which were stacked on top of each other. The crates were not large enough for the dogs that were in them and appeared to have not been cleaned in months. The deputy and officer said that packed-down feces inside the crates ranged from 1/4 to 2 inches thick. There was no water in the crates for the dogs.

On the other side of the garage were three cats in a large cat tower that had three shelves. The litter box on the bottom of the tower was overflowing onto the other side of the floor in the tower. The cats had no place to walk. According to the deputy and officer, the entire bottom of the tower was full of urine and feces.

Seven more dogs were found in an enclosed area behind the garage. These dogs did not have water.

Britten took the officer inside the home to check on the rest of the animals. The officer said there was only one path to get through the home; it was a very small path and only one person could fit through at a time.

The officer said there were more crates stacked on top of each other in the dining area. There were 22 dogs in these crates, some crates contained two dogs. The officer said the crates contained a lot of urine and feces.

Seven dogs were loose in a bedroom. There were clothes and belongings on the floor that had urine and feces on them. Britten told the officer she slept in a bed in this room, surrounded by baby gates.

The animal services officer said the animals found in the home were underweight, had fleas and skin conditions. Some had deformed feet or burned pads on their feet. Some were blind or had long nails and or matted fur.

Britten signed over ownership of 21 dogs to Hernando County Animal Services.

If Britten does not find homes for the other 26 dogs and three cats, they will be picked up and transported to Hernando County Animal Services.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is investigating. Citations and a court date will be issued once veterinary examinations are complete.
