***UPDATED at 1:21 P.M. on Monday, June 16th***

The search for a black bear in Columbia County continues.

The search began shortly after midnight.

The animal was spotted in Martinez and then later near the Warren Baptist Church at Washington Road and Fury's Ferry Road.

The bear was last seen at Wheeler Road and Forest Court.

Columbia County Sheriff's Office deputies and Georgia Department of Natural Resources officers were posted on both sides of the residential area earlier Monday.

Columbia County Animal Services officials says the bear is probably sleeping at this time.

Residents we spoke to said they weren't too worried about the wild animal.

"It doesn't bother me that much...I don't think they're very harmful," said one resident.

"A little concerned about a bear being in the area...I would probably just run, stay away from it," said another resident.
The last bear sighting in the area was back in 2009.

The search is on for a black bear in Columbia County.

The latest sighting was Monday morning off Wheeler Road and Forest Court, which is near South Belair Road.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources officers are now on the scene, as are Columbia County Sheriff's Office deputies.

They're reportedly standing guard at the entrance to a wooded area, just in case the animal emerges from the brush.

The search for the animal started around midnight in west Augusta.

A photo sent to our Facebook page show the bear possibly in front of a car dealership on Washington Road, not far from Warren Baptist Church.

Officials are working to track down this animal, and they say they will tranquilize it when and if it is found.

We will continue to follow this developing story and provide more details as they become available.
