A 14-foot-long Hammerhead shark gave some local fisherman a big scare over the weekend when it went after a Tarpon they had hooked on their line.

One of the men on the fishing boat videotaped the deadly encounter (see video above).

It happened Sunday, a few hundred yards off of the beach at Anna Maria Island. Rob Caragiulo, 47 was competing in the charity White Buffalo Tarpon Tournament with Ken Ross, 46, and Wade Wolfe. The men were in second place and had a 5-to-6 foot long Tarpon on their line. They were almost ready to hoist the Tarpon on the boat, weigh it, and then release back into the water.

But, they spotted the Hammerhead shark, who had its eye on the Tarpon.

"We saw the big shadow under the boat. We were freaked out," said Caragiulo, who described the shark as a "monster".

Caragiulo said they loosened the line on the Tarpon and let it swim away from the boat. Then, they followed the Tarpon and were going to try to reel it in again, when the shark returned. This time, it attacked the Tarpon and ate it.

Caragiulo said Hammerhead sharks follow fishing boats a lot, knowing an easy meal could be nearby.

"They're pretty smart creatures," he said.

Caragiulo videotaped the shark and at one point was about a foot away from it. "It's pretty unsettling when you're hanging overboard," he said.

The White Buffalo Tarpon Tournament is a charity fishing tournament that benefits the Operation Second Chance organization, which helps disabled vets.
