Augusta, GA -
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a body found in the Augusta Canal, around noon today. After arriving to the corner of 13th Street and Telfair Street, deputies spoke with a fisherman, who found the body lying face down in the water. Richmond County deputies say there were no signs of foul play.
Deputies say the body is a black male, but onlookers say they saw a white man.
"Just from me looking at the back of his head, he had a full head of white hair, and it was just kinda straight, and kinda short cut, but not too short. But yea it was a Caucasian male," says Rose Jones, an onlooker.
The Richmond County Coroner, Kenneth Boose, says they will not know the exact race or identity of the victim until the autopsy is Complete.
Rose Jones is a resident of a nearby apartment complex, and said she saw everything. She said nothing was blocked off, so kids, as young as, 3 were outside and saw the body as well.
"I was able to go to the fence, and anybody was able to go to the fence, and peak through, and look at the body just floating in the water," Rose said.
Rose's daughter, Dazhia, said she became extremely emotional after seeing the body, because she had never seen anything like it.
"I did feel sad, and like I don’t know, but I just felt shocked, because I have never in my life, seen a body like that, just laying there," Dazhia said.
Rose and Dazhia said the worst part was the smell.
"He had to be there for a few days, because, like you could smell it when you get close to the water," Rose said.
