News Channel 6 Investigates: Hughes Roofing Company

Posted: Updated:
Augusta, GA - News Channel 6 Investigates first told you that some homeowners say they were scammed by Hughes Roofing Company. The homeowners say even though the company took money from them, Hughes Roofing never finished the repairs. We spoke to the owner, Sean Hughes, about the allegations. He says his company is a little behind because of the ice storm.

"It was on a much larger scale than we first realized when we first went out. We had no idea it was so widespread and literally, it seems like every house got hit," Hughes said.

But one of his customers, Sandra Wilson, says otherwise. She says she gave Hughes a $500 check as a down payment. 3 months later, Hughes still hasn't completed the job.

"He has never set another foot on my property, in fact, the last text message from him he said, I am not doing that work and you are not getting your money back," Wilson said.

On Friday, Hughes took Wilson to court because he says she was harassing him about the job.

"I honestly didn't want to take a warrant out on her, but she just wouldn't leave me alone. She was relentless and it was the only course of action that I had. I had to go and fight back," Hughes said.

The judge dismissed the case. Wilson says she was just trying to get her money back.

"I have researched him. And there must be 10 or 12 different bad reviews about his business practices on the internet," Wilson said.

And Wilson isn't alone. During Friday's court hearing, she was joined by 2 other homeowners who say they were also scammed by Hughes.

"I just want him to be forced to stop these illegal business practices," Wilson said.

"We have every intention of fulfilling these agreements. We don't take deposits and then not return and do the work," Hughes told News Channel 6.

At least 3 homeowners have filed criminal complaints against Hughes Roofing. A judge will hear those cases sometime this month. Investigators say if you've been scammed, you need to file a report as soon as possible.
