Aiken, SC -
Aiken County is hiring three new teachers this fall to teach elementary and middle school children for whom English isn't their first language.
Three new teachers will be designated ESOL, meaning "English for Speakers of Other Languages".
Jeanie Glover, the director of Federal Programs for the Aiken County Public School District, says there are teacher to student ratio requirements not currently being met. She says hiring these ESOL educators will bring them one step closer to ensuring students get the best education possible in Aiken.
"We want to see these kids graduate from high school. I mean, that's our goal as a school district, is to graduate children and have them ready for society," Glover said.
Glover says plans to hire more ESOL teachers is a possibility. She says 26 percent, or one out of every four, students at Clearwater Elementary School speak Spanish as a first language.
