Beldoc, SC -
It’s called Beldoc, eight miles north of Allendale, the county seat of Allendale County. Hey everybody, ring a bell.
"I don't really know, I don't go that far out,” says Allendale County resident Irene Jordan. “You don't know it that well?” we asked. “I don't,” she said.
Beldoc...there’s a sign. Two, actually, less than a half mile apart on South Carolina Highway 3, a railroad track. Anything more?
“Nothing that I know of, nothing,” says Pastor Glenn Orr, another Allendale County resident.
“No, just a little crossroads,” added Jean Wilson, another longtime Allendale County resident.
“Nothing there at all, no sir, not much,” says Melodie Ford.
But, they may disagree at the Whistle Stop, the home of the Flour Sack Gift Basket Company. Or the Beldoc Rose Saloon, or how about Beldoc City Hall?
"You ever been to the Beldoc Rose Saloon?” we asked Jordan. “Never have,” she said. “Beldoc Town Hall?" we asked. Never have, never have,” she said.
But, it’s all there together in beautiful downtown Beldoc.
Beldoc Town Hall is housed in the same building as the Beldoc Rose Saloon. It makes sense to me, I know a few city governments that could drive you to drink. I can't wait to get inside and take a look, but this thriving center of business in Beldoc was closed...gosh darn it. We found the owner, but she said she wasn't dressed for TV. You must keep proper appearances in Beldoc.
We didn't get a look inside, but the sign says Beldoc Town Hall. Surprised? It's there in Allendale County.
“I would be, yes,” said Ford. "If there is one, you would be surprised?” we asked. "Yes I would,” said the longtime resident.
“You've been to the saloon?” we asked Rev. Orr. “No, no, I’m a preacher, I don't go there,” He said.
Well, not many go to Beldoc, even those in Allendale County. It seems all roads lead anywhere, but there, but if you happen by, you see Beldoc is bustling, and we're not horsing around.
