Augusta, GA -
More properties are being bought in the area surrounding Augusta National Golf Club. This time it's off of West Vineland Road, which borders the south side of Augusta National. In recent years, blocks of houses off Berckmans Road were bought and turned into the current parking lot, and the apartment complex and shopping center across Washington Road were purchased and demolished.
People on the block are seeing homes being purchased by Berckman Residential Properties LLC and their neighbors packing up and leaving. The company owns a dozen homes on West Vineland Road.
“I would like for the Augusta National to contact me,” said Rebecca Freeman, who lives in the center of the block of homes purchased by Berckman Residential Properties.
Freeman is one of the few homeowners still residing on West Vineland Road next to Augusta National Golf Club. She's hoping the phone rings soon with a money offer for her home.
“I would certainly like to sell to the Augusta National because everything they buy turns into something the community can be proud of,” said Freeman.
While Freeman said she knows some residents who have contacted Augusta National to sell their homes, none of the residents News Channel 6 spoke with had received a call or letter offering money for their land.
A number of properties appeared to be vacant and some even had signs for rent. Berckman Residential Properties purchased homes on Vineland according to a search of the Geographic Information System website.Several properties are listed under that name.A dozen are on West Vineland Road. No one here knows what Berckman Residential Properties plans to do with these homes, but we do know what happened to the homes it purchased on the other side of the National.
“I don't expect anything like Berckman Road received, but I would like enough to be comfortable in a neighborhood I would be very proud of,” Freeman said.
The neighbors who spoke with News Channel 6’s Renetta DuBose can't be certain that the golf club is expanding its reach, because the National doesn't comment on such matters, they do agree that the process looks similar to what took place in other surrounding areas.
