Capt. Barrington Irving speaks at Morgan Road Middle School.
Augusta, GA -
Students at Morgan Road Middle School got a visit from Captain Barrington Irving, the first African American pilot to fly solo around the world. His message to the students was, "If I can do it, so can you."
He stressed that there are plenty of opportunities in math, science and technology for young girls and minorities.
Capt. Irving told the students he wants to see them chase after those opportunities.
"Less than 1 percent of engineers are women. Overall as minorities, the statistics are less than 10 percent. If we had more folks involved in these industries, we'd have even greater innovations and greater triumph as a civilization."
Before pursuing an aviation career, Irving passed up a scholarship to play football at the University of Florida.
