Lincolnton, GA -
***UPDATED at 6:57 A.M. on Wednesday, May 14th***
The winningest high school football coach in Georgia history is in hot water tonight. Former Lincoln County Football Coach Larry Campbell was arrested and charged with simple battery Wednesday morning. He is out on a $5,000 bond.
Campbell's arrest comes after officers responded to an alleged fight at the Board of Education building on Tuesday night. A man by the name of Shaun Glass told officers that minutes before they arrived, Campbell grabbed him and threatened his life.
According to the County School Superintendent, Brian Campbell, who is also Coach Campbell's son, Tuesday night's meeting was full of passionate citizens. Behind the board room doors, eyewitnesses say that passion turned into rage after no decision was made on a personnel matter.
"There was a large crowd and there were some comments made toward me as superintendent. My father was in the audience. He was offended by some of the things that were being said about me. And as I think any father would, he felt he needed to take up for me," the superintendent said.
According to witness statements, Coach Campbell grabbed one of the outspoken individuals by the shirt collar and threatened to kill him.
With a population of about 1,500 people, the city of Lincolnton has been buzzing about the incident since Tuesday night. Everybody there knows each other and they all know the coach personally as well.
"To last as long as he has. To stay in place that long, I think that tells you what the community thinks of him," Former Lincoln County Player Al Saggus said.
And despite the coach's history there, the police department moved forward with the investigation.
"It will be treated the same as regular Joe Blow on the street or anybody else," Interim Police Chief Gene Poss said.
But for the superintendent of schools, the incident is personal. Even though Brian Campbell says he is proud to work for a county that takes pride in its school system, he says things got out of hand.
"He was simply acting as a father taking up for his son. This does not diminish what he has done for the community and what he has done for the state and for the kids in this community," Brian Campbell said.
We did reach out to Coach Campbell, as well as the victim, Shaun Glass. Both parties tell News Channel 6 they have no comment at this time.
