Aiken County Drowning Victim Identified

Aiken County, SC - The victim in a Tuesday afternoon drowning in Aiken has been identified.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton has identified the victim as 74-year-old William Richardson, of Aiken.

Carlton tells us, Richardson was fishing with a friend at Gem Lakes in Aiken at approximately 3:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when the canoe they were fishing in capsized.

According to witnesses, the two were attempting to pull up the anchor when the boat overturned.

Life jackets were in the boat, but neither man was wearing them. The investigation is ongoing.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Aiken Department of Public Safety, and the Aiken County Coroner's Office are investigating the incident.

Autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning in Newberry, South Carolina.
