Augusta Mayoral Candidate Profile: Hardie Davis, Jr.

Augusta, GA - Hardie Davis, Jr. says he's a pastor, politician, engineer, and concerned citizen...and he's making his way back to Augusta from Atlanta ready to make changes to the Garden City.

"I want to champion what's good about Augusta and bring industry back into downtown Augusta. We've got to go from the industry piece, to where there's a retail and commercial piece," Davis told me.

Davis represented Georgia's 22nd District in the State Senate for several years, but resigned his seat to run for Mayor of Augusta. He says he has the insight and the vision to take Augusta to another level. "Our community needs leadership...strong, stable leadership...leadership that's able to work with all of our citizens," he said.

In 2012, a proposed amendment would allow the state of Georgia to approve charter school applications. Then-Senator Davis made local headlines in connection to the controversial legislation. "Let's be clear, as a legislator, what I allowed for or voted for was to place that question on the ballot so that the citizens of Richmond County and the state of Georgia could, in fact, determine that, Davis said.

Davis invited us to come to the Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School. He says the change that we need starts in each and everyone of these classrooms.

These students are learning about, and repairing, computers, and bio-medical engineering. They're also building race cars and winning awards. "What we're doing here is vital to the long-term success of our community and, in particular, Cyber Command. I want those students who make up our school system to know that they have opportunities when they come back to Augusta," Davis said.

The skills these students learn will open the doors to high paying jobs...jobs that will create funds that could support future SPLOST projects. "Never, at no point in time, did I say that I was opposed to SPLOST. I have consistently been on the record, saying I not only support SPLOST, but I believe that there are projects in there that are important to our community," Davis told me.

Davis' plan is to utilize those contacts and connections he's made on the state level, to help Augusta grow. "Make no mistake about it, people talk about, 'well, the Mayor doesn't have a vote.' Well, it's not necessary to have a vote, but you have a voice, and you have a vision, and you've got to cast that vision where those other leaders who make up the Commission they can buy into that because it impacts all of Augusta," Davis said.

His vision is to unify the community into one Augusta.
