A candidate for a seat on the Richmond County Board of Education has been arrested and charged with simple battery.

According to a Richmond County incident report, 53-year-old James Swanagan was arrested on Friday after a deputy witnessed him beating his 29-year-old daughter with a belt. The victim, Kimberly Swanagan, told the deputy that her father pushed her to the ground, jumped on her, and then continued to strike her with the belt.

The report says the victim was able to get away, but when she made it to her car, her father pulled her by the hair to the ground and started beating her with the belt again. Kimberly Swanagan told the deputy that the incident started after an argument.

James Swanagan told the deputy that his daughter called his fiance a vulgar name. He then told the deputy that he began beating her with a belt because of the vulgar language

James Swanagan is running for the super district 9 seat on the school board.

A 53-year-old man who is running for a seat on the Richmond County School Board was arrested on Saturday.

James Swanagan, who is running for the district 9 seat, was arrested for battery. He is still being held in the Richmond County Jail.
