Augusta, GA -
It's a story you're only going to see on WJBF News Channel 6. We're giving you a look at the hallway where Monday's Paine College shooting took place.
Paine College Vice President Brandon Brown gave us a tour of Haygood-Holsey Hall, and introduced us to some of the people who saw the events unfold.
"I was thinking it could have been me. It could have been somebody in that class. It could have been one of us. It could have been the teacher," Freshman D'juan McGruder said.
McGruder says the shooting took place right outside his classroom. He says his teacher acted quickly to keep her students safe.
"The door didn't lock, so she told us to put a table against the door. We all got on the floor and crowded between the desk and tables," McGruder said.
Throughout the building, students and faculty did what they could to prevent the unthinkable.
"We had several students that were walking throughout the halls, right outside these doors. We rushed them into this office right here and then closed and locked the doors for safety," Director of the Heal Complex Gabriel Gadson said.
Moments before the shooting took place, Kendrick Elder says he saw the suspect, Xavier Cooper.
"He's one of my friends. He didn't say anything to me, so I knew something was wrong. I saw him get on the elevator. And I walked to one of the teacher's buildings. That's when I got the text message that there was a shooting at Haygood. When it happened, I kind of already knew who did it, but I didn't want to believe it because he was one of my friends," Elder said.
College officials say after the incident, the shooter ran across the quad to a nearby building. That's where police caught him. But now, Elder just can't forget the moments leading up to the shooting.
"I could see it in his face, that he was angry and I knew that they had something going on for the longest time," Elder said.
