Teacher pay raise talk looms at Wake Co. awards dinner

Posted: Updated:

Teachers are taking notice of Governor McCrory's big plans to get them paid.

McCrory announced this week, his budget will call for a base pay increase and yearly raises among other things, in an effort to stop the bleed of teachers leaving the state or the profession.

Thursday night, hundreds of Wake County teachers gathered for a dinner in downtown Raleigh to celebrate their achievements.

Allison Reid, an english teacher from Heritage High School was named Teacher of the Year, one of a handful of finalists honored.

Though the night was about honoring their work now--many--were focused on the rewards they could stand to receive.

"It means a lot," said teacher Tonya Garrett of the Governor's proposal. "It just shows we are valuable as teachers."

"It's definitely a sign of respect. Recognition that we are working really hard and we are doing a good job," said teacher Brandace Byrd.

"I think its a start," said Ericka Lucas, Principal at Rolesville High School. "It will allow teachers to see that we are trying to get back on the right track."

Teacher Chris Iadicicco, added, "None of us went into this job thinking we were gonna make a lot of money." But says, "I think it will help."

Just because the Governor has proposed more money for teachers in his budget--it doesn't mean the legislature will pass it. Stay tuned.
