Police: DMT drug is rare, trending near colleges

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG - Police say Dimethryltyptamine (DMT), the drug found during an investigation at University Terrace apartments in Blacksburg last Friday,  is only seen once or twice a year.

In fact, it is so rare that state police do not give DMT its own category when they track drug case data.  Instead, DMT is classified under "other narcotics." Recent tracking shows DMT comes up most frequently near college campuses.

Police say the drug typically comes from the root bark of a South American plant, and that some of the methods used to make it are similar to manufacturing methamphetamine. They say it is a very powerful hallucinogenic drug that is highly flammable and transmitted through the air and through the skin.

23-year-old Jerrelle Downing of Blacksburg was arrested in connection with the DMT bust last Friday, and police agencies are teaming up to prevent DMT from becoming a trend across the New River Valley.
