Top ranked junior Scheffler wins 4th Junior Invitational at Sage Valley

Posted: Updated:
Graniteville, SC – April 27, 2014 – Once again, it came down to the last hole to determine the champion for this year’s Junior Invitational.

As the day began, Tournament leader Scottie Scheffler got
off to a slow start at 2 over par through 5 holes letting many close pursuers back into the hunt including Brad Dalke, and Theo Humphrey. Scheffler quickly righted the ship and gained back the
lead with 3 birdies at 6,7, and 8 to make the turn at 35.

Meanwhile, Cameron Champ blisters the front 9 for a 4 under 32 to make the turn at 4-under for the
tournament. On the inward 9, Champ falters with a bogey on 10, but steadies himself with pars on 11, 12, and 13 before making a great birdie on 14, and an eagle on 15 to take over the lead. Scheffler
after the losing the lead playing in the group behind Champ, answers with his own birdie on 15 and they both head to the treacherous final 3 holes tied for the championship.

Cameron blinks first with a wayward drive on the 17th hole that left him in the right fairway bunker nearly 210 yards away. His
second shot found the rough left of the green, and he was unable to get up and down thus making bogey and falling one back.
Scheffler makes a steady par on 16, but faltered on the 17th hole with a bogey, which set up for one final hole to decide the 4th playing of the Junior Invitational. Champ’s drive was blocked right off of the
tee on the 18th tee, which found a resting point in the pine straw to the right of the fairway bunkers.

Given no option to reach the green, Champ pitched out to 75 yards, and from there hit his approach 15 feet short of the hole. Champ facing a putt to get in the clubhouse at 5 under nearly missed and he
tapped in for his 5, giving him a 4 under total for the Championship.
Scheffler, meanwhile behind Champ also blocks his drive off of the 18th tee in the right rough. He was left with an approach of over 210 yards out of the rough and as Champ finished he knew that par was
needed to win the gold jacket.

Scheffler chose a 4 iron for his approach and hit one of the best shots
of his career as the ball landed just on top of the back ridge of the green merely 12 feet from the back hole location. As he approached the green, Scheffler knew that two putts were good enough to host
the trophy for this year’s tournament. He did just that by hitting his first putt just by the edge, and he tapped in for a 5 under total of 211 to become the 2014 Junior Invitational Champion.

Third place went to Brad Dalke, who at only 16 is playing in his third tournament.
