Augusta, GA -
Driving through Richmond County, News Channel 6 spotted several pedestrians crossing roads illegally. It's something that Richmond County Deputies see more than you think.
"Sometimes they are on the curb, as cars are approaching, and they're stepping or darting out into the path of the vehicle and not allowing enough time for the vehicle to be able to respond or react to avoid a collision," Richmond County Corporal Michael Pletcher said.
So far this year, there have been 28 accidents involving pedestrians, 4 of them resulting in deaths. Last year, there were a total of 65 accidents and 6 deaths.
Pletcher says most of the accidents happen because people aren't using crosswalks.
"We've investigated several of them that have been within a short distance of a crosswalk, but for whatever reason, the pedestrian decides to cross either before or after the crosswalk," Pletcher said.
Most people don't even realize that if you're walking across a crosswalk, you have to make sure the walk light is on. If the walk light isn't on, you can be ticketed for that. Another fact people don't realize is if you walk off the crosswalk or diagonally across the street, you could also be cited for that as well.
Speaking of citations, deputies will be writing a lot more of them if you don't cross the street correctly.
"Maybe parents taking their children across the roadway, especially small children in a very bad, unsafe situation, or unsafe manner. That may be a cause for a citation," Pletcher said.
And if there aren't any crosswalks nearby, Pletcher says the best place to cross a road is at an intersection.
"Preferably timing it with the traffic signals that traffic is stopped when you're cross that intersection," Pletcher said.
We also want to remind people that if you're going to be out during the night, make sure you are wearing bright colored clothing. You can even purchase reflective gear for as little as $5.
