Boy who got drug from Durham's Chimerix released from hospital

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -

Josh Hardy, a 7-year-old Virginia boy who received an experimental anti-viral drug made in the Research Triangle Park, has been discharged from a hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

According to Hardy’s mother on the CaringBridge site, the boy was released Thursday, exactly one month after hearing Chimerix, a Durham drug maker, was going to release the drug for Josh.

Hardy was hospitalized at St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., as his heart and kidneys were failing. Hardy has battled cancer four times.

Chimerix at first refused to administer the drug, but an extensive social media campaign waged by Josh's family led to an agreement between the company and the Food and Drug Administration. Chimerix’s drug was not yet approved by the FDA because it was in the final stages of clinical trials.

Hardy was the first patient to be administered the drug, which is called brincidofovir. Nineteen others were also given the drug.

After 100 days of in-patient care, Hardy was granted one wish before leaving the hospital.

According to Memphis television station WREG, Hardy got to see his favorite NBA player, LeBron James, play against the Grizzlies.

WREG said Hardy received a free ride to the game from a local ambulance company and got tickets in a suite.

According to the family’s CaringBridge account, Hardy still has a long way to go to a full recovery.
