DHHS fines, suspends admissions at Clayton group home

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services fined a company that owns a group home in Clayton $10,000 and has suspended the home's admissions after a 12-year-old resident was hit and killed by a car near the home in March.

DHHS sent the letters to KMG Holdings, Inc. stating admissions to The Lighthouse in Clayton have been suspended “until conditions are documented to meet approved inspection status.”

The suspension letter from DHHS shows the company is allowed to contest the suspension through filing a petition within 20 days.

In a separate notice, DHHS fined KMG Holdings, Inc. $10,000 following a March 21 survey that found The Lighthouse was in violation of general statutes. The company has 30 days to appeal the fine.

The state said The Lighthouse failed to provide continuous supervision for two clients and did not keep current medication records two clients, among other violations.

Khalil Todd was hit by a Honda Accord on Ranch Road near Clayton March 10 after he ran out of the facility.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it has responded to the group home 213 times since 2006. The nature of those visits was not confirmed.
