SC Senate passes bill allowing legal bridge games

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina Senate has approved a bill aimed at allowing retirees to legally play bridge.

The bill received unanimous approval Tuesday without debate. It says members of social clubs or groups can legally gather at someone's home or community clubhouse to play games with cards, dice or tiles.

It represents legislators' latest attempt to change the state's 1802 antigambling laws that ban any game with cards or dice.

GOP Sen. Tom Davis of Beaufort proposed the bill after state police warned a manager at Sun City Hilton Head last May that the bridge and canasta social clubs it advertised for residents violated state law. Davis' bill has moved quickly since he threatened to challenge the outdated law in court.

It requires another perfunctory vote to head to the House.
