Augusta, GA -
A movie about the life of the Godfather of Soul hits the big screen this summer.
If some people get their way, the premiere of the James Brown movie will happen here in Augusta.
The James Brown movie "Get On Up" hits theaters this summer and bringing back many memories for his daughter Deanna Brown-Thomas.
"It will be some of the good, bad and the ugly because that's life," said Brown-Thomas.
During that life, the Godfather of soul never forgot where he came from. The garden city missed out on the chance to have the movie film here, but now there's a push to get its premiere in James Brown's home town.
Brown-Thomas said, "When they were actually filming. I kind of brought it to the table. It's something that Universal, the studios, are considering."
Now there's a Facebook page to help the studio make a decision.
Brown-Thomas said, "I was humbled to know that there's people out there who feel in their heart, not just talk about it, but are actually putting action to it."
"We haven't really spent any money or anything to do it. It's just been local promotion," said Sean Frantom, the creator of the Bring the "Get On Up" Premiere to Augusta Facebook page.
After just two weeks, there are nearly 2-thousand likes.
For Frantom, James Brown's legacy shows how important it is for the movie to debut here.
"I think because of what James Brown did for Augusta, Georgia and think about how many times he put Augusta, in his music and in his songs," said Frantom.
The hope is to have the premiere at either the Imperial Theater or GRU's Maxwell Theater. No matter where it's held in Augusta, the executives at Universal studios know a premiere is wanted.
"It's again, according to them and trust me, they are aware that Augusta wants this to happen," said Brown-Thomas.
Frantom said he has gotten a letter of support from the mayor and he's hoping to get one from the Governor.
