Augusta, GA -
Wednesday is World Autism Day and Mayor Deke Copenhaver has proclaimed it Augusta Autism Awareness Day, as well.

The move was inspired by by Deidre Roberson, whose 6-year-old son was diagnosed with autism four years ago.

Roberson and her son will meet with Mayor Copenhaver at 2 p.m. on Wednesday to receive the proclamation.

On Saturday, Roberson will host a community breakfast to bring together parents of autistic children.

It's the first event with her newly founded Autism Awareness group, MOMS - Moving Over Mountains against autism.

Augusta Commissioner Corey Johnson is expected to attend the breakfast, which will also include guest speakers and discussion about the disorder.

The breakfast is open to anyone, and all families of children with autism are especially encouraged to attend. RSVP by emailing or calling 706-495-3161.
