TARPON SPRINGS, FL (WFLA) -

A five-vehicle crash closed the northbound lanes of U.S. 19 for several hours on Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened sometime before 3:27 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 19 and Klosterman Road, closing the intersection to traffic for about two hours.

Tarpon Springs Police sent out an alert at 5:49 p.m., saying the intersection was open.

An initial investigation found that a black pickup truck traveling southbound on U.S. 19 turned left, directly into the path of northbound traffic. This caused a crash involving five vehicles, according to Tarpon Springs Police.

The man and woman in the truck were airlifted to area hospitals with possible life-threatening injuries. Four people from the other vehicles suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to local hospitals.

Two of the injured were children, ages 1 and 2, who were in car seats. A 16-year-old male and a 44-year-old female were also injured.
