LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

The family of a Lakeland man shot and left for dead is trying to come to grips with why someone would take his life.

The body of 22-year-old Demetrice Stacy was discovered Monday morning by workers operating a trash truck. Police said he was shot multiple times.

There’s no suspect named yet but detectives were working into the early morning hours Tuesday, trying to figure out who's behind the fourth homicide the city's seen in just three months.

Family and friends of Stacy crowded around the scene shortly after detectives responded to the call that a dead body was lying in a ditch off Prospect Street Monday.

Then Tuesday as the reality of losing her nephew set in, Bridgett Stacy tried to figure out where it all went wrong.

“My sister had got him a job, he had started staying home, he had just turned around,” Stacy said. “He had started to turn around and I guess I don't know what happened from there,” she said.

Demetrice Stacy was not a known name to Lakeland police, though just last month he was arrested for burglary. But his family tried to get him back on track because they knew he could do better.

“This looks like something someone did out of anger and I can assure you that we're going to do everything we can to get this case resolved quickly,” Sgt. Gary Gross with the Lakeland Police Department said.

Sanitation workers discovered Stacy in an area not known for crime, but his home is just a few miles away, near a section News Channel 8 highlighted last week for its recent violence.

“There's a good possibility that something happened in that area and he was taken to a different location but right now it's just way too early to know,” Gross said. “They're trying to get information from the community, trying to piece evidence together.”

As police uncover the clues, a family is left wondering why and sending a message to who's behind it.

“I just want to say this to them: 'Y’all didn't have to do him like that. That was wrong and you know it was wrong,'” Stacy said.

Police said they're working to determine whether Demetrice Stacy was in a gang or had any affiliations but the family said he was not.
