ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

A pedestrian carrying groceries was struck by a car while crossing the street in front of St. Petersburg High.

Police say the 56-year-old man was crossing in a crosswalk at 5th Avenue North and 25th Street when hit by a Nissan Altima heading westbound around 11:23 a.m.

After being stuck, the man flipped up onto the windshield of the car and then fell off onto the roadway.

They say the man, whose name has not been released, has undergone surgery and is in critical condition at Bayfront Hospital.

The driver of the Altima and a passenger received minor injuries.  The driver, 79-year-old Antonio Sanchez, was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

No students were involved in the crash.

The intersection has since re-opened to traffic.
