Waynesboro, GA -
After winning a statewide award, a local farmer said he's proud to put Waynesboro in the spotlight.
Dick Byne runs Byne Blueberry Farm, where he makes organic blueberry juice, among other produce items. He recently took home first prize in the beverages category at UGA’s 2014 Flavor of Georgia contest.
Gov. Nathan Deal and Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black were on hand to congratulate Byne.
“He said, ‘We have a winner from Waynesboro.’ Well, Waynesboro got some recognition…I thought that was pretty neat,” Byne said. “And Burke County got some recognition, too.”
It’s the third year that Byne has won a first prize in a category at Flavor of Georgia.
“We’re trying to be ahead of the curve, not behind the curve, we’re actually leading the pack,” Byne said. “We are strong in agriculture.
In 2012, Byne’s dark chocolate covered blueberries won the first prize in confections, and in 2013, his Burke Bar — a snack bar featuring Georgia-grown pecans, blueberries, honey, soybeans and oats — won first place in snack foods.
