MANATEE COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - The owner of two Australian Shepherds that attacked a boy has until 11:59 p.m. Thursday to put the dogs down.  A Manatee County judge says that owner Karen Erskine can have the dogs euthanized by her own veterinarian and she can keep the remains.

Earlier in the week, a Manatee County judge upheld a decision to put "Buck" and "Bill" down because of an attack that happened on Christmas Eve in 2012.

13-year-old Justin Curtis was on his bike trying to bring a letter to a mailman when he saw two dogs running toward him.

“I was expecting them to jump on me and lick me or something,” he told News Channel 8 in 2012

Instead, the dogs attacked him and bit six times, which tore into his muscles.

“I tried to get them off the bike and they kept biting me,” said Curtis. “I tried taking off, but they just dragged me to the ground.”

A man driving by stopped to help.

“The police said if he hadn't done that, they would have killed me,” said Curtis.

The dogs attacked another man in the neighborhood as well.

The dogs' owner, Karen Erskine says Manatee County Animal services took the dogs and was going to give them back to her with some instructions and warnings a few days later.

Instead, Erskine says the boy’s family filed a lawsuit and the dogs were later sentenced to death. She has been fighting ever since. The dogs have been in confinement for more than a year.

“I had never been separated from my dogs in my life. That’s what I have left after my divorce, that’s my family,” said Erskine.

County officials did not want to comment on Thursday.

We will have more on this story at 6 p.m. on News Channel 8.
