BROOKSVILLE, FL (WFLA) - A security guard at a Hernando assisted living facility is charged with two counts of attempted murder after investigators say he battered two residents with a blunt object.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says the attack happened at the Atria at Evergreen Woods, located at 7030 Evergreen Woods Trail in Brooksville. The sheriff's office received a 9-1-1 call at 12:38 a.m. Thursday from the assisted living facility about a person who was beating up a security guard.

Deputies say when they arrived, the on-duty security guard, Jonathan Sousan, was fighting with the suspect, 22-year-old Brian Christopher Murphy, who is also a security guard at the facility.

Witnesses told investigators Murphy, who works as a weekend security guard, arrived sometime after midnight Thursday and broke into the rooms of two residents and allegedly battered each resident with the scissor jack.

“It’s really a miracle that they are still alive, quite frankly,” said Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis.

Victims Miriam Lepp, age 88, and Joseph Giambrone, age 83, were transported by Hernando County Fire/Rescue to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say Sousa's response prevented further injury to residents and staff until law enforcement arrived. Detectives charged Murphy with two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held without bond at the Hernando County Jail.

“We haven't been able to find any motive. The only thing that we can really find is that we believe Mr. Murphy was addicted or was under the influence of some drugs but other than that it’s anybody's guess,” said Nienhuis.

“Both victims, it’s been very difficult for us to interact with them. I don't think they're even conscious much less able to talk with us,” added Nienhuis.

In a statement from Atria Evergreen Woods Assisted Living Facility, they say: "Everyone in our community is deeply saddened by the horrific events that took place in our community last night. We extend our deepest sympathy to the victims and their families, and we are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.

Our focus at this time remains communicating with our residents, families and employees, and making sure that everyone in our community is safe and has access to the resources they need. We're currently offering counseling services to our residents and staff, and are providing support in any way that we can following this traumatic event."

They say Murphy worked as a part-time security guard, and had been employed for approximately four months.

Prior to hiring, he passed a background check and drug screen, which are required by both Atria and the state of Florida.

The crimes, as noted by the Sheriff's Department, seem isolated and random at this time.

The statement finishes, "We extend our deepest appreciation to the Atria security guard who was onsite and stepped in to bravely subdue the suspect - his actions were heroic and we are grateful to have him as part of our team. We are also extremely grateful to the Hernando County Sheriff's Department for their swift and prompt response early this morning, which resulted in the suspect's capture and arrest.

We continue to work closely with local authorities while they continue their investigation, and will continue to provide information as it becomes available."
